Why Does My Hair Suddenly Look Thinner?

Why Does My Hair Suddenly Look Thinner?

Most of the time thinning hair doesn’t represent a serious underlying medical problem, but that doesn’t mean it won’t affect how you feel.

Your appearance is an integral part of who you are and how you feel about yourself. If your hair is thinning, there’s like a treatment or combination of treatments that can help.

At the Osteopathic Center for Healing, Neil Spiegel, DO, and Jennifer Gularson, PA-C, want you to live an active and happy life that includes a healthy self-esteem, busy social life, and overall sense of well-being.

We understand that when you’re unhappy with how you look, it can be difficult to feel great, which is why we offer services like injectables and treatments for hair loss

Men and women lose hair

Sometimes people think hair loss is largely a problem that men have, and men do experience androgenetic alopecia, male or female pattern hair loss, more often than women. Around 50 million men have male pattern hair loss, while about 30 million women have female pattern hair loss.

The pattern of hair loss differs between men and women. Men tend to lose hair beginning at the hairline on the sides of the forehead and moving back in the shape of the capital letter M. Women tend to lose hair on the crown of their head and along their part.

Hair loss happens most often to men after the age of 50  and to women after menopause. Your risk is also higher if you have a family history of hair loss. Androgenetic hair loss tends to be gradual.

Reasons for hair loss

If your hair begins to thin suddenly, you may not have androgenetic alopecia. Some of the common reasons people experience sudden hair loss include medical problems, such as cancer treatments or infections.  Certain medications, too, can cause hair loss.

Stress may also lead to hair loss. When you lose hair because of stress, you may notice it very suddenly, or if you have a problem with chronic stress, it can happen over several months. Some of the stress-related reasons for hair loss include:

Treatments for hair loss

The first step in identifying the best treatment for your hair loss is understanding why it’s happening. At the Osteopathic Center for Healing, we work closely with you to help you reach an optimal level of health.

During your consultation, you can expect lots of questions about your lifestyle, medical history, and family’s medical history. All of this information helps us pinpoint reasons for your hair loss.

We offer a variety of treatments for hair loss and often find a combination of those treatments is the most effective approach. Microneedling can stimulate your scalp to release growth factors, which can improve the health of your follicles.

Sometimes we suggest combining microneedling with a treatment called platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, which uses your own body’s ability to heal to help your follicles grow new hair. We may also suggest topical or oral therapies.

If you’ve noticed more hair on your pillow, in your brush, or in the tub, schedule an appointment at the Osteopathic Center for Healing. We may be able to provide a solution that allows you to feel great about how you look.
